In my opinion you cannot compare the experience of cooking at home against the experience of dinning out. They belong to two different universes. One is more of an event than an everyday job. The effort one puts into might be the same, but the outcome is completely different. In your kitchen you might cook for up to 20 people every now and then. You have time to plan and prepare and enjoy the process. In a restaurant a team cooks for around 100 guests every night and everything has to be part of an action plan and well executed so that the occasion is memorable. All the details, from the execution of the food to the service have to be perfect and the ambience stylish and fitting.
That might be the reason why it is also extremely complicated to rate a dinning out experience. Is it just the taste of the food, or is it about how the food was plated, or the way the table was arranged and styled, did the beverages came to deliver a satisfactory pairing, was the service efficient and friendly…
Then when eating out, what is taken into consideration? Everything would be my answer. But it still remains a subjective matter, because it depends on so many variables like, the kind of day you had, the people you are with, the occasion you are celebrating…
Whatever you decide, if it is to stay in and spoil yourself or go out and still spoil yourself, do it. At the end what is important, at least to me, is to have some tasty food on a plate and the little rituals around sharing it with the people you care about.
