History states that John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich was playing cards. He was also hungry but didn’t want to interrupt his game, so he ordered two slices of bread and roast-beef in between, so he could eat with his hands. And the sandwich made its way into the world. It appeared to be so practical and tasted so good, that its use spread throughout Europe and ended in the Americas at some point.
Practically every country has one version of a sandwich that they call their own. I can think of the panini in Italy or the Bành Mi of Vietnam, among many others.
In Mexico there are a lot of adaptations of this tasty meal. They are known as tortas, consisting of white bread rolls called bolillo o telera, a spread of beans, the filling of your choice: meat, chicken and/or veggies, cheese, avocado and chilies. Tortas can be used for nibbling or as a whole meal, depending on where you are and what time you are having it. My favorite is with milanesa (a thin steak coated with breadcrumbs), and yours, dear reader?
